Chrysler Rebuffs Government Recall of Millions of Jeeps

In a move rarely seen in the auto industry, Chrysler is refusing to recall some 2.7 million Jeeps which the government says are prone to catching fire in accidents. The issue lies with fuel tanks for 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees, and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberties – and despite a request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Chrysler is refusing to recall these vehicles because they don’t agree with the government’s assessment.

This is a bold move by Chrysler, especially considering that standing up to government recalls rarely ever happens. What makes this case even more interesting is the fact that Chrysler is essentially thumbing their nose at the very same government which bailed them out to a tune of 10.5 billion dollars not long ago.

Recalls happen all the time in the auto industry, and even the best brands aren’t impervious to them – but this is one recall story that’s really getting headlines right now.

Do you respect Chrysler for holding their ground and standing up to the government by fighting this recall, or do you see this as a company more concerned with profits than the safety of their customers? Would this keep you from buying a Chrysler? Leave me a comment and tell me your thoughts!

Here’s a great video from CNN that helps explain this issue further:
