Do you understand the process of prospecting and recruiting? Do yourself a favor before reading this — take a moment and watch my video on filling the funnel and shaking the bean jar! When you deal with a small number of people at one time instead of filling the jar with lots of possibilities, you tend to focus on specific individuals because they are the only opportunities you have. As a result, you come across apologetic, pushy, desperate or overly aggressive when you try to prospect and recruit these individuals. By “cultivating” possibilities instead, you will find prospects that want to try the business, and those prospects lead to even more people when they become sponsored or customers. This is similar to the process of “sowing” and “reaping.” You can’t expect to plant one seed and have an entire crop. You need to plant hundreds of seeds, and then you need to cultivate them. You need to water them and fertilize and till the soil. With time, continued cultivation and nurturing, some send germinate and grow. Some eventually bear fruit and can be harvested or “reaped!”
People generally talk about three things:
- What’s happening (Chitchat or small talk. When they do this for more than three minutes it almost always leads to options 2 and 3!)
- How terrible things are (Complaining or what they do NOT want)
- The way they wish things were (Their wishes, wants, goals or WHY)
Social networking like this creates curiosity and interest, and the people you know ask questions. This is just like cultivating a possibility that you meet in person. If you do it a lot and keep up with your social network, your expansion through these tools can blow up overnight. Part of what you have to do cultivate and nurture your relationships by being responsive and interactive. If the people you begin cultivating relationships with do not complain, this can trigger an opportunity for you to bring the business. When you have a positive relationship, you can always use the referral technique by asking for their help by referring the right people to you. (refer to my post the social media revolutoin)
This is why you need to learn and use social networks. In a separate post, I will talk about the basics of social networking, how you can get involved, and how you can improve your skills with these incredible tools. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Ultimately you need to decide if you want to live in the past. Don’t become a human typewriter.Keep growing,JR Ridinger
